Where do you look when you want to find listings of local products and local services?  The telephone book’s yellow pages?  At the ads in the Hay River Review?  (That is often the first place I look!)  Yes, both are good places to look when you need a plumber or an insurance agent or want to find the hours for the medical clinic or the food pantry.  What about when you are looking for maple syrup or honey?  Someone to trim your horse’s hooves?  Buy a side of beef or lamb?  Find someone to care for your dog when you are out of town?  Buy some farm-fresh eggs?

How about a Hay River Valley community directory that would include local products and services?  Members of the Hay River Transition Initiative have started collecting information for just that!  You can view the very beginnings of the directory on the Local Directory web page on the http://www.hayriverti.org web site. Check it out!  We need your help to get a lot more entries so the directory can become a useful tool to support our local economy here in the Hay River Valley.

The directory will be similar in some ways to the classifieds that you see in a newspaper.  The main difference will be that you’ll be able to use the directory to find a wider range of goods and services within our local community.  The directory will have the usual tractor repair shop, plumbers, and contractors, but will also have the part-time handyman, deerskin tanner, and tool-maker that might not have a yellow pages ad. Local products you might see listed include food items like eggs, beef and honey, and also custom artwork, firewood, handmade soap, and bio-fuel.

The directory will enable us to shop locally for more items.  It will be a way to spend more of our hard-earned dollars locally for the products and services we need.  When we shop outside our community, our money often goes to big corporations in far away places  This  siphons the money out of our local economy.  The directory will be a way for our community to connect with each other and to support each other.

If you would like to be included in the directory, please fill out the form below or the form on the web site.  Encourage your friends and neighbors to add their goods and services, too.
