September 12th

Everything Gardens Presentation

A free presentation on tricks and methods for storing garden produce for the winter (without a root cellar) is at the Prairie Farm Village Hall classroom, 115 North River Avenue, Wednesday evening, September 12th, beginning at 7 PM.

The event is sponsored by the Hay River Transition Initiative (HRTI) and features Jan Erdman, an organic gardener from Menomonie. Jan has been growing and storing food for the past 40 years with the goal of eating year around from her garden. She has learned many things about ‘low-tech’ food storage in those years. Jan will share some philosophy and what has worked for her over the years.

Jan says, “Although I have had ‘root cellar envy’ at various times, I have decided that other food storage systems work for me. I would like to get people away from the idea that they can only store food successfully if they have a two- or three-chamber underground properly vented and temperature controlled root cellar. For most of us this ‘ideal’ cellar might never become reality.”

Come, learn from Jan (and from each other!) how to eat your live, home-grown food, year around, using low-tech, energy-wise methods.
